Fishing in West Tennessee Lakes

I moved to Memphis, TN in July of 2006 after graduating from Maryville College which is located at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. I originally found it very difficult to find decent lakes to fish for largemouth bass near the Memphis area. For those of you that don't know, even though Memphis is located on the east bank of the mighty Mississippi river it is nearly impossible to fish unless you fish some back water or oxbows. Also, most of the smaller lakes in the Memphis area are privately owned and can only be fished by residents that live on the lake. So this only left the options of driving a couple hours or traveling across the state borders and paying a ridiculous out-of-state license fee, or so I thought.

After talking to some locals in the Memphis area I soon realized that there were several lakes in a 50-75 mile radius that have had great production of largemouth in recent years. Specifically, I found out that there were several Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency managed lakes in the area and lakes that were run by the state parks. So I quickly began exploring these options and was pleasantly surprised at their production of MONSTER bass.

For this article I'll only talk about Glen Springs lake located just north of Memphis in a small town called Drummonds, TN. This lake is managed by TWRA and is managed quite well in my opinion. The lake appears to be old flooded woodlands which is why there is a 5 mph speed limit. Don't let the speed limit deter you from this lake though because you can get to most spots in less than 15 minutes at that speed. Plus, I can personally tell you that going faster than 5 mph will seriously jeopardize your outboard's safety from avoiding submerged, mid-lake stumps. Since the land is owned by TWRA the surrounding property is completely undeveloped and provides great scenery with plenty of wildlife as well.

My first great experience with Glen Springs occurred in 2008 on a very chilly April afternoon. My cousin-in-law and I went out in his 14 foot john boat on what appeared to be a horrible day to fish. The weather had turned sour fast with a massive cold front blowing in the previous night. However, the clouds remained the next day and the winds stayed constant at about 10 mph. Obviously, the first thing I had in mind was "I sure hope the spinnerbait bite is on".....and it was. Throwing a ½ ounce booyah spinnerbait with a red and white skirt and tandem willow leaf blades I hooked my first bass in a matter of minutes. I put her in the boat and she weighed in at 3.5 pounds. Adam was throwing his shallow crankbait with no luck until I caught my second fish a few casts later that weighed in at 4.2 lbs. Of course Adam quickly tied on his red and white spinner and started casting as fast as possible. Not 5 casts later Adam had landed himself a 4+ pound fish. We only fished for a few hours but the day only got better from there.

Midway through the day Adam and I double hooked on two bass that weighed a total of 8 pounds. Soon after the double hook set I landed a monster 6.3 pound hog just off a shallow stump on an extended flat. It finally got close to dark which meant we had to load up or TWRA was going to lock us in. We tallied up the day's total fish and weights and came up with 20 fish and the best 5 weighing just over 27 pounds. This of course was one of the best fishing days I've ever had and I know exactly where I'll be come next April.
